Bulky item pickup in Los Angeles County

Before you pay anyone to haul a sofa or a fridge, check whether your city will take it free. Here is how the system works and where paid hauling actually earns its price.

First: check your free options

If you live in the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation & Environment picks up bulky items (appliances, furniture, mattresses, water heaters) directly from the curb. Residents schedule a pickup through the 311 system or the MyLA311 app. It is free for residential accounts, but it is slow: collection windows commonly run a few weeks out, and items must be staged legally in front of your property, not inside it.

If you are in an unincorporated area or a contract city, the LA County Sanitation Districts and your city's trash provider usually offer their own bulky-item program. Rules and wait times vary by city, so check your provider directly before assuming you have to pay. Many cities include several free pickups per year; a surprising number of residents never use them.

What free pickup will not take

When paying a crew makes sense

How to decide in five minutes

One heavy appliance sitting next to your curb with no deadline: use the free pickup. A garage full of mixed junk in two weeks: get a quote. A single sofa upstairs and a truck you would have to rent: price both; the crew is usually cheaper once rental, fuel, and your time are counted. Our junk removal price ranges are listed on every city page, and a real quote is always confirmed before any loading starts.
